Mark Alznauer from Northwestern University will be discussing "Kant and Hegel on the Final Purpose of the World." Abstract: Kant and Hegel were the last great philosophers to make the notion of the final purpose of the world (der Endzweck der Welt) central to their thinking. For both, our answer to the question of whether the world has such a purpose determines our basic attitude toward human life, particularly toward the evils and injustices that are a seemingly inextricable part of life. In this talk, I explore the nature of their disagreement about this topic, paying particular attention to Hegel's critique of Kant at the conclusion of his Science of Logic.
